I know that Perforce supports Macintosh files very well. You can set the
file type of the file to 'apple', and it will store the files creator code,
file type and both the resource and data forks.
So, a subsequent checkout should result in the file with the same icon as
when it was submitted.
And, Perforce is free for two user's...
I would recommend using either the command line tool or the p4v gui client
when using Perforce, instead of the built-in support for Perforce that Xcode
has.
