Pasting into MS Word

I have a requirement that my program be able to paste a series of small images into MS Word. I'm using an NSTextView and inserting the images as NSTextAttachments. Copying them puts RTFD (in addition to some other uninteresting flavors) on the clipboard, which pastes into TextEdit nicely, but not Word. It appears that Word requires RTF instead. Is there a relatively painless way to get plain RTF out of this? Is there another alternative?
