What I like to do in such situations is to write my own version of the system-provided class, which is API compatible. That way, it'll be easier to deploy to the system-provided class if it provides enough benefits.

And if I realize the system-provided one is better than my version, I can even use a runtime switch to decide which one to use. -- Cheers, M.
