Hello,
there was a similar question about this topic a while ago, before
receiving faxes on Mac OS X was possible, so i thought i could try
again now.
Is it possible to trigger an incoming phone-call over the built-in
Apple modem, the way the fax app does in OS X? Purpose is to do some
things with the incoming data, like checking the caller id etc...
In theory, yes - the modem is a device you can talk to, etc... And
there are also a whole raft of AT commands you can send to the modem to
do things like check caller ID, and even play/record digital audio.
I even had an answering machine software package under OS 9 that did
this very thing. However, the results were less than stellar - the
default modems didn't include support for caller-ID, and, in general,
were pretty limited and didn't do a great result with the audio (I've
since switched to Phlink and been quite satisfied).
So if you're goal is to include stuff with caller ID, the answer is
probably no.
