Tnen the question becomes: how do I get gcc 2 on my system in combo with Xcode 2.1? Because I have code that won't compile with gcc3 and higher and which I should not change.

I don't think gcc2 is even included anymore with Xcode 2.1, you probably have it left over from some old Developer Tools install, which would explain why it's broken.

FWIW, my G5 has gcc 2.95.2 installed. I believe the original version of Xcode installed was 1.5 (but I could been 2.0) - but there is definitely a gcc.2.95.2 receipt in /Library/Receipts. It may have been installed with the 10.1 SDK (which, for some reason, I've also got).

Unfortunately, as I recently discovered, the gcc 2.95.2 installed ends up being less useful than it was on a 10.1 system. Using the 10.1 SDK and compiling a simple "#include <map>" in a C++ file will result in 250+ errors (at some point something switches from C++ back to C and complains from there - I've examined the preprocessor output and found nothing obvious - all the extern "C"{} were properly closed, etc...)

The result of this frustration was firing up my laptop and booting 10.1 off an external drive partition and using Project Builder.
