As I understand it Spotlight uses the presence of your plug-in in the
Spotlight plug-ins folder to keep the index up to date with respect to
your data files.
Couldn't you add a check to the initialization of your application to
look for your plug-in in the proper Spotlight folder and if its not
found prompt your user with a dialog asking them if they wish to put
the plug-in in there and update Spotlight (using mdimport and proper
administrative login of course) ? Would that be a bad design principle
?
