Thanks for your reply; I tried the following, but "Fubar" is not
displayed in the text view until the "Open"event which caused the
code fragment to be performed was completed.

    NSString *aString;
    aString = [NSString stringWithCString:"Fubar"];
    [textView insertText:aString];
    [textView setNeedsDisplay:YES];
