It's actually very very similar to Xcode's "Groups & Files" outlineview!

Are there any examples I can look at the technique for how it is done, with icons. Right now I'm finding learning by example is useful, as I'm quite new to Cocoa.

Take a look at /Developer/Examples/AppKit/DragNDropOutlineView.
