You can read the file in easily enough using the open-source IconFamily class(es) and the volume's path (/Volumes/ VolumeName/.VolumeIcon.icns) and then manipulate it as an NSImage and write it back out to this location once modified. If you'd like an example of this would be DriveGauge's functionality (http:// www.infinitenexus.com/dg/) If you need further clarification on the process let me know and I'll see if I can dredge up some relevant code. IconFamily has been often discussed and the archives likely have plenty of info and its easy enough to use in my experience.
