I was in a similar position just under a year and a
half ago - I had an idea for a (rather complicated)
app that I wanted, but my only experience at
"programming" was dabbling with HTML and making a
couple of C programs by adapting code found online
(with very little real understanding of what I was
doing). Thanks to two excellent books and some good
forums and documentation, my program is now in
beta-testing. :)
The two books, which I would recommend unreservedly to
anyone wanting to start programming in Cocoa with no
experience, are:
Programming in Objective C by Stephen G. Kochan
Cocoa Programming For Mac OS X by Aaron Hillegass
(I see both these books have already been recommended,
and for good reason.)
Start with Kochan's book. You won't be programming
pretty-GUI-Cocoa apps at this stage, but it will give
you all the understanding-groundwork you will need for
programming in Objective-C, using the frameworks and
designing the underlying structures of your program.
It assumes no prior programming knowledge, and is
beautifully written - it is not a dry trudge like
other programming books I have tried. I worked through
it in about a month, covering a chapter a night (or in
two nights as the chapters got harder). The author is
very receptive and helpful, too.
Once you've read that, you'll be ready for Hillegass's
book (which does assume some programming knowledge,
which you will have gained from Kochan). Like Kochan's
book, it's relatively short, breezily written, and all
based on short example-based tutorials, so you can get
through it in about another month (assuming you only
have a couple or three hours a day to spare). After
that, you'll be ready to experiment, using the
documentation and perusing cocoabuilder.com and
cocoadev.com...
Hope that helps some.
Good luck,
Keith
--- ORIGINAL MESSAGE ---
After researching through mnay forums and asking many
people, I'm
convinced I need to learn Cocoa, why?
I'm a graphic designer who works on developing
software (mac platform
only) for therapeutic uses (handicapped children),
actually I just
develop the concept and layout and somebody else does
the programming.
Currently I'm "simulating" things using Macromedia
Director but I
really would like to make my own stuff without
depending on somebody
else.
The problem is I HAVE NO PROGRAMING EXPERIENCE AT ALL,
I don't know if
scripting in Lingo counts (Macromedia Director Script
Language), but
let's assume not.
- It is possible to learn Cocoa without going through
the painful way
of learning C first?
- Can anyone recommend me a good book( I prefer books,
tutorials are
good for me, but I prefer to start from a Book) to
start from the
scratch?
- Should I start with AppleScriptStudio and
Applescript first?
- Should I learn something definetely easier like
RealBasic?
I know it sounds akward..."this guy wants to learn how
to fly a 767
without even gone inside a Cesna", but I really would
appreciate any
guidance.
Thanks in advance.
