Custom NSMenu on NSSearchField question

I'm developing some code for KisMac (kismac.de) to improve the search engine. I added a "search type" NSPopUpButton next to the NSSearchField. The NSPopUpButton specifies search type (i.e. SSID, BSSID, Vendor or encryption). Someone suggested I use a custom NSMenu for the NSPopUpButton and put the contents of the NSSearchField in that.
I adjusted the template for the NSSearchField and I get this: http:// img151.imageshack.us/img151/1319/picture93mf.png
I have looked through the code for anything that I missed referring to this (searched for _searchField). However, the four items are greyed out. I can't see any code doing this. Do I need to enable them? And how do I find the option selected? The same way I got it from the past menu?
