For some reason, [NSPrintInfo paperSize] can sometimes take many
seconds to return (ranging from 10 seconds up to several minutes)
when we call it when our app is launching and it is creating its
first untitled document. Once it has successfully launched,
subsequent launches will be much quicker for the next few hours/days,
after which point it will do another slow launch. (Restarting the Mac
during this 'fast period' does not make it revert to being slow
again. It is definitely time related)
This has caused our customers to assume that it had crashed at start
up and so they contact our support department. Obviously if they are
using the trial version, they may just throw it away without ever
trying it again.
This wouldn't be so bad if it was a common problem to all apps, but I
can't find any other application that exhibits this. Has anyone else
seen this at all?
I suspect that sometimes the lower level printing stuff just 'goes to
sleep' and can take a while to wake up.
FYI
It is easy enough to force a slow launch by simply setting the clock
forward a couple of weeks.
At first I thought it was only related to using shared printers, but
customer feedback implies it can happen with local printers also.
This seems to have become more common since 10.4.3, but I remember
this happening sporadically back in the 10.3.x days
Any ideas?
