I find this code hard to read. Maybe outdated (project builder
project?), and I am not able to build it with XCode 2.3.

Upgrade the projects to native, and uncheck "treat warnings as errors" in the target settings. I have filed a bug against it to get it updated (<rdar://problem/4625036>).

Is there another sample project out there, for having a helper tool
running as root?

It's still the best. Have you read the relevant documentation (Performing Privileged Operations with Authorization Services)? Do you have any specific questions?
