Thanks for both of your responses. Of course it turns out that is was
being dumb and this was an obvious bug on my end. I was sure that I
had not created any NSAnimations, but it turns out I was and had just
forgot, and I'd also forgotten to stop the animation before releasing
it, and that's what caused the problem. Thanks again for your responses.

Progress indicators come to mind. Default buttons with the
"pulsing" graphic active. There's a short animation when a toolbar
is shown or hidden.

Do you have secondary threads in which you play (drawing in) with
images ?
If yes it may be related or similar to rdar # 4562222
(crashes when using threaded animation of a progress animator when
secondary thread is building images and calls TIFFRepresentation)
also got same kind of problems with secondary thread calling
CGContextDrawImage inside lockFocus/unlockFocus on an imageā¦
