You can definitely do that. Or fire up an app like Illustrator. In
terms on multi-DPI images, I know that Photoshop CS 1 doesn't handle
them. Cannot speak for CS 2.
Good suggestion, this would definitely be the preferred way if scaling
display does become popular, and still give developer the freedom to create
nice looking buttons. Otherwise, multi-resolution image may work as well.
Because to be honest, I really can't imagine creating all the controls using
code; not unless you are not entirely obsessed about beautiful looking app
like Apple. With Apple leading the way with all these Photoshop-ed custom
controls... I mean, just look at the Resources folder of all of Apple's
iApp, easily more than half of the controls are Photoshoped.
