Been there too, they all suck. However, on Windows you can use the Explorer Extensions that run in user level space so it's a bit more forgiving than vfs. And I cannot recommend running an ftp client in kernel space. Writing a kernel extension that hooks 2 user level processes together starts to become way too complicated, don't you agree? And that brings me back to my original response.
