When this came up in the long ago time, Steve Christensen posted a
happy fun function that made it a simple compare.
See http://lists.apple.com/archives/carbon-dev/2005/Oct/msg00788.html
for the happy fun time code.
I've been using it on both PPC Macs and the ICBMs with no issue.
Ack, at 11/18/06, Bill Cheeseman said:
With Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, Apple introduced three new Gestalt selectors for
determining the version of the running operating system:
gestaltSystemVersionMajor, gestaltSystemVersionMinor and
gestaltSystemVersionBugFix. The Gestalt documentation indicates that this
was done to permit system versioning in which the minor and bugfix version
numbers can go as high as 15, as in Mac OS X 10.4.15.
