Cocoa & the handling of aliases

I've just noticed something interesting how some programs handle
aliases. I tried dropping an alias onto some applications, and those
which responded would open up the original file. Now, if I have a
"dead" alias where the original file no longer exists, I can hover
over an application icon, and the icon will darken, but when I let go
to launch the application, nothing happens. Is there a way to get
the application to respond to the dead alias and just treat the alias
like a file and not try and resolve where the alias is pointing to?
Chad
