Perhaps you have one of NSShowNonLocalizedStrings or NSShowNonLocalizableStrings set in your preferences. See the bottom of this document:

NSCells also look at NSShowNonLocalizableStrings during on-screen display.

Searching google and the list archives hasn't turned up anything. I'm hoping someone here has an inkling of what's going on.
