NSDateFormatter weekdaySymbols

Is there a way to automatically populate weekdaySymbols in an NSDateFormatter instance?

If I create a new DateFormatter and call weekdaySymbols, the returned array is empty. Explicitly setting the locale and formatting styles yields no different result.
