Just heard back from Apple - apparently both bugs are known bugs and filed under 5192100.


I really hope you guys at Apple have a chance to fix this soon, now that 10.5.1 and 10.4.11 are out.

This probably has little to do with the engineering side of things, but IMHO opinion it's a little embarrassing to sell "DRM-free" music that cannot be decoded with your own audio library. In the end, that's just another way to manage digital rights.

With 10.4.11, I finally managed to play iTunes+ files with CoreAudio (afplay and afinfo works great ;-)). Check if 10.4.11 did solve your problem.
