with the Cocoa project template and the Carbon project template
seems to confirm this).
FWIW, this is a MBP with GF8600.
In my case, I have a desktop-sized window that updates every 5
seconds, in the Desktop layer (group?) so that it appears behind
finder Desktop icons and in front of the Desktop Picture.
If I have a lot of windows covering a portion of it for long enough,
revealing the desktop (either by closing the window(s) or expose-ing)
results in a grey or blue (or possibly the desktop image; I'm not
sure) rectangle that then gets filled in an instant later. The key is
that a portion of my window has to remain obscured for some period of
time; trying again immediately after does not reproduce the behavior.
It might also have to do with the initial draw, after launching. In
that instance, the system may be deciding that that part of the window
can never be visible, and so nothing draws there. However, my draw
operation does not clip to anything but the full content view.
