Whats the trick to making directories appear as single files?

I've got an application that stores its documents in a directory wrapper. Like .app directories .components, etc ...

However, upon save the thing just looks like a folder and double clicking it doesn't launch my app. Is this controlled by HFS file attributes of some kind?

Thanks for any hints.
