I don't see why you think it's useless? NSWindowController is not
only used in document-based apps. You're perfectly free -- and, in
fact, often encouraged -- to create one yourself, in your own code, in
non-document-based apps. In this case, you may very well have no need
to subclass NSWindowController but you do need File's Owner to point
to something useful. That's where -initWithWindowNibName:owner: comes
in.
