It's not over the top, it is precisely what you must do.

Thanks everyone for this and similar advice. I'll use an agent that runs at login and periodically after that. Good to have GUI access too - I'll probably use the Sparkle framework to manage updates.


The technote Jens linked to is great. Odd that Apple doesn't integrate these more closely with their guides.

I'm supporting 10.4 as well as 10.5 so a global login item isn't an option. I'm looking into using /Library/LaunchAgents; apparently these "might be launched in the context of non-GUI login session" so I have some more reading to do in this area - presumably there's some way to detect this state of affairs.
