Probably because the app in which it works displays this message as part of the bindings machinery, specifically NSEditor and NSEditorRegistration. Is it the case that one of your apps uses bindings and the other does not?

It is not the case.. they both use bindings but in the case where I only see 1 button, the NSTextField and bindings are created programatically. Neither bind through controllers.
