Is it possible to use a CICheckerboardGenerator filter to fill the entire background of a CALayer so that I get a similar effect to that which Photoshop has when the content is transparent?
I've tried a lot of things but the filters only seem to want to work on the content.

Any ideas? Is there another way to do this?

I *just* did this, but did not use it in a CALayer. I simply created the CIImage from the generator, and then used the -drawImage... method on the CIContext to draw it in my view's -drawRect: method.
