Simple Modal Password Dialog

I know that I must be missing something simple, but I have been unable to figure out how to password protect a simple application that I'm writing. I create an new xib file add a panel and I'm able to come up after my app loads but I haven't been able to figure out how to make the dialog modal. I'm sure there must be some easy way to do this since I see it on so many applications.
