You should look at Launch Services. This Carbon API will tell you the application that will open for a given document or kind of document.


"The Launch Services function LSFindApplicationForInfo locates an application based on its name, creator signature, bundle ID, or any combination of these characteristics."

Look at LSGetApplicationForInfo, LSFindApplicationForInfo, LSGetApplicationForURL and related APIs.
