Service without calling app to front?

Hi,
I offer a couple of clippings services via the application services menu for my app in the usual manner. So when the user is looking at text in another application, he or she can select some of it, go to the Services menu and have the text automatically pasted in my app.
All of which works fine. But by default, using a service brings your app to the front, which isn't always desirable. I've noticed that some apps - e.g. DevonThink - manage to get around this somehow, so that if you select a clipping service, the app icon just bounces in the Dock but the app itself doesn't come to the front. Is there a way of doing this that I'm missing? Obviously I could just call [NSApp hide:nil] at the end of the service, but that isn't ideal.
Thanks and all the best,
Keith
