Check box cell in NSTableView

I can not get my check boxes in an NSTableColumn to show the mixed state. The first time I click an empty check box, it shows as if it is checked, it should have been mixed. The next time I click it, it still shows checked, this time correct. The third time I click it, it is shown unchecked, also correct. Then it starts over again as checked, checked, unchecked...

I have checked the Mixed button in IB.

What have I missed here?
