Is the System keychain an appropriate place to keep a daemon's
credentials? If so, how can I get access to the item even after a new
version of the daemon executable?
Are you using username/password because you're authenticating a
client, or because you're authenticating a user? If the former,
consider generating a certificate and storing it in your app's
Application Support folder.
The daemon has to authenticate to the server with a username/password
pair, and they can change (especially the password).
