As others have pointed out, this is C type casting. Here's a couple of references:

If this is confusing you, you probably need to do some introductory tutorials on basic C syntax. I highly recommend Stephen Kochan's book "Programming in Objective-C" which has an excellent section on the parts of C that are relevant to Objective-C, as well as being IMO the best Objective-C language book out there.
