API for secured web service communication (WSSE)

Dear all,
Did anyone made experiences creating a native client application, which communicates with a secured web service? Is there any API which I could use to accomplish this? In times where everyone is talking about SOA and cloud computing I find it hard to believe that there's nothing more sophisticated than doing a HTTP POST/GET request transmitting clear text to the server...or using Java...

Thanks a lot
Best regards
Meik
