determinate NSProgressIndicator animation

In a determinate NSProgressIndicator the blue portion animates in some application (Finder copy is an easy example). I have noticed that this is not always the case. My guess is that the animation takes place in the main thread of the application, but if the main thread is busy, the animation does not take place.

Is my guess basically correct? Is there an easy way around this - other than spin off a bunch of threads.
