Did you read the docs for 'redComponent'?
"This method works only with objects representing colors in the
NSCalibratedRGBColorSpace or NSDeviceRGBColorSpace color space"
Use colorUsingColorSpaceName:NSCalibratedRGBColorSpace to convert.
