OK Thanks everyone for the very helpful input. I've never had any formal computer-science training and take the ease of Applescripting for granted. Moving to Cocoa is going slowly but well. These are the kinds of things I didn't learn in Cocoa Boot Camp (great, but so much yet so little in 7 days) and I appreciate all your tips about topics (multithreading, -[NSApplication run]) that I would probably never ever think of until everything crashed.

BTW This is a corporate-internal application only, so the format of phone numbers doesn't need to handle multiple locales. But if I were making a public application I know would have to handle other formats, and all sorts of user gaffes.
