If you believe this to be the case, you need to go back over the
language basics. This isn't even specifically an Objective-C problem;
your approach would not work in C, Ruby, Python… or pretty much any
language except stack-based ones and Smalltalk.
Please review the introductory documentation on programming in Objective-C.
