Thanks, but that doesn't work for me. However I've now created a small test program where changing the control size works correctly, so I think I can narrow it down to see what causes the problem.

You need to set the actual size of the view. The control size is used by the cell to determine how to draw itself. You can use -sizeToFit for this.
