Wow, I've found that setGroupsByEvent:NO generally causes all hell to break loose with Core Data – many warnings printed to Console, and exceptions raised.  I've made it a rule to never do that in a Core Data app.  Although I routinely begin and end undo groups, they are always super-groups enclosing the groups created by Core Data.
