I dug around AppKit to include Apple's implementation in my own app. It was pretty simple and worked great for a while, but for some strange reason, after some OS version, it started crashing for apparently no reason, for *some* people, *some* times. I've used private APIs here and there when I had no other option, and I've never had one break like this one did. There just was no logical reason it'd be crashing. I couldn't figure it out so I bailed on it altogether. From that experience, I wouldn't recommend trying to use it.

I suggest you file a report at radar.apple.com to make it public.
