Upon studying my situation a little further, I realized that my Birds and Fish also needed to be moved to a different managed object context. (Yup, some serious database rework.) Since Xcode's mapping model editor can't do that, I had to delete these Entity Mappings, and instead implement them in code (NSEntityMigrationPolicy) where, of course, it worked.
Maybe next time.
