Incredibly, this was only added in 10.6. Are you on an older OS? See
setNameFieldStringValue:

Well, sort of. On Snow Leopard, that is the correct method. On Leopard and earlier, the -runModalForDirectory:file: and the sheet- based equivalent do the same thing if you pass in a string for the file argument. Incidentally, that method works in Snow Leopard as well, although its use is now deprecated.
