Eric,
I is my understanding that some of the reasons digital cameras are hard to
profile is because the optical components of the camera that includes
filters, sensors and optics are in some cases very different between each
camera. This allows each brand of camera to capture very wide ranges of
colors that might be outside of a third party's camera profiling target. In
those cases profiling does not work well. So then a supplied camera profile
from the camera vendor might be the best because the vendor knows the colors
and tones the camera can capture and then creates a great profile for that
camera.
