Greetings All,
I'm with Jack on this real-world vs. theoretical view. All I can say is
this: After getting (1) a well built camera profile and (2) a really neutral
gray card to gray balance the camera in differing lighting conditions, the
only adjustments I must make to files from the Nikon D1x are small
adjustments in brightness and contrast. My editing and file-prep time have
decreased significantly. This means less stress, more productivity and maybe
even a bit more sleep in my deadline-driven world. To me, that validates
both the theory and the money I spent to implement it. It makes perfect
sense to me that if what a camera profile is intended to do is map the color
response of the particular camera, then if that is accomplished carefully
and deliberately, subsequent lighting is irrelevant if the camera is
properly gray balanced.
Let's not blame camera profiling for the shortcomings of other parts of the
workflow. If the technique for lighting and capturing the target file to be
read by the profiling software is flawed, let's blame that technique or the
poor instructions/documentation from the software publisher that led to that
outcome. If the problem is a lousy gray target (like the Kodak gray cards),
let's blame that. If it's lousy non-transparent software that9s messing with
the data behind the scenes like PictureDesk (or the internal machinations
Nikon does to somehow give us what THEY SAY is Adobe98 from the D1x!!),
let's blame that. We're all quick to criticize the lack of transparency in
what Epson drivers are dong with the data, behind the impenetrable walls of
their printer drivers, which fouls up the profiles on the output side. Why
shouldn't we be equally critical of what's going on on the input side. If
PictureDesk forces us to jump through hoops, let's condemn Kodak and the AP
or whomever is responsible for PictureDesk. Condemning camera profiling for
these situations risks "throwing the baby out with the bath water" as my Mom
used to say. If only ALL camera software was as clean and clear as the Phase
One stuff! Don't even get me started about Nikon Capture.
