I've actually had some pretty good results at 1:1 on press. The
inkjets I've used all have asymmetric resolutions, generally higher
than 600 ppi, and I've had some images that, on glossy paper on the
Epson 720x2880 dye inks, actually benefitted from going as high as 480
ppi. On matte papers, I don't need as much, but 200 seems on the low
side. Then again, on a large number of images I suspect you wouldn't
see the difference. I've learned the hard way not to publish magic
numbers for FM resolution...
Fair enough. Note that I said rendering resolution, not print
resolution. An IJ printer (rip) advertising 720x2880 dpi print
resolution will typically render at 720x720 ppi (!) since very few rips
(or drivers) can handle asymetric rendering resolutions. That means that
sending data down at anything more than 720x720 ppi is just a waste of
bandwith and time, and it might actually result in artifacts depending
on how the rip handles downsampling. The rendering resolution is the
maximum image resolution one should ever use, because anything above
that will definitely be thrown away (downsampled). But typically you
will stop seeing benefits of increasing image resolution well below the
rendering resolution (assuming you can actually scan/generate/capture at
sufficient resolution). Another rule of thumb: never do upsampling
(making the image bigger than it was originally) in PhotoShop or the
like before sending it to a rip: again just a waste of time and
bandwith. Any PS rip can do that job just as well, and much faster
typically.
But of course I agree with your bottom line: experiment, and use what
works for you.
