Re; Dr. Rudolf Hell passes away (neil snape)
Neil's post was most gracious, and prompts me, as perhaps the Heidelberger
who most frequently visits this list to add a thought or two in passing.
While claiming no direct experience or association with Dr. Hell or Hell
Graphics specifically, I myself having joined the already merged companies
of Linotype-Hell in the US, it is well noted amongst the more veteran
employees, who trace their beginnings to the Hell companies, the reverence
they exhibit whenever Dr. Hell is mentioned.
It was an amazing revelation to me that he was involved in so many core
development efforts of the base communication technologies we are so
accustomed to using today. One typically thinks only of the imaging and
color, but it is so much deeper than that. More amazing, he was still going
to his office to work, even after his 100th birthday celebration.
He holds an honored place in the history of the graphics arts industry and
his name carries on. In May 2001, the City of Kiel named a street in his
honor, the former Siemenswall leading to the property shared by many
Heidelberg operations, is now Dr.-Hell-Strasse. And the gravure business
group is still Hell Gravure Systems.
From the earliest experiments to the ChromaGraphs ... which begat the first
Linocolor expansion board, which begat the CTU, which begat the very thing
for which we gather about this list, an OS level color management kernel ...
his footsteps are there.
On another note, I must say I have been most anxious to reply to the list
with information about Newcolor for the Mac, but alas, it is still a bit
premature for any public disclosures, as you all can understand I am sure.
Although IPEX in Birmingham this April may have some interesting products on
display <G>. Sometimes wishes do come true.
