It sounds to me like the problem is related to having multiple

I haven't followed all of this thread but this sounds related to an
issue I have with a G4 Powerbook. I use it often but not always with
an attached Cinema display. Sometimes the system remembers to set the
Cinema Display and its profile as the default display and other times
not. I can find no predictable logic as to when the system is going to
get it wrong. It's not just a matter of restarting with the Cinema
display attached after working for a period without it and the system
still thinking the Powerbook LCD is the default display. Sometimes it
does that sometimes it doesn't. Needless to say, when the system is
assuming the PowerBook display as default yet I'm looking at images in
something like Preview on the Cinema Display the color is really off.
The problem occurs often enough that I've taken to keeping ColorSync
Utility in the dock so I can pull it up and quickly confirm which
display is the default and manually change if needed. Not a wonderful
way to have to work but at least I can deal with it if I know what's
going on. This process really threw me for a loop for the first couple
of months of owning this computer/monitor combo.
