You ought to try PrintOpen's new 'Correct Measurement Smoothing' tools. It
makes for much smoother gradations by seeking out the 'general' behavior of
the press instead of fitting all the measured discontibuities. Averaging
compensates for some inherent variation in the print run, and it's a
necessary practice, but it does nothing to model the underlying press
behavior, in my experience.
