Is training absolutely necessary for do-it-yourself dentistry? Probably
not...but.....

Without links you CAN match the color.
However, the idea of a high-end digital dot proof is that people want to
look at the dots. If they don't, well then, use an Epson 9600....with the
exception of fine type and microlines you can get that to match color too.
But color managing a dot proofer with profiles (and NOT links) will yeild
scum dots in pure yellows, cyans and magentas, and your black-only drop
shadows and text will convert to 4-color black. Also, reg marks and 100%K
overprints will convert poorly. So as a dot proof...results with
profiles-only will be bad.
You are probably going to find that you are going to need to use ICC device
links which preserve things like pure contaminate-free channels, 100%K
overprints, etc. And yes, the software is expensive (but CHEAP compared to
the cost of the Spectrum).
Ahem, and you may find there is alternative to Gretag's Link solution....one
that may be a better value (www.leftdakota.com and look for Link-o-lator).
